Ask a Marrakech villa how many guests it holds and you will get one number. There are always two, and they are rarely close together.
The two numbers
- Seating capacity — how many people can sit down to dinner. A question about ground, and usually generous.
- Sleeping capacity — how many can stay the night. A question about bedrooms, and usually much smaller.
A property with a garden for 150 and eight bedrooms is completely normal. If your guests are staying on site, the bedroom count is your wedding size. If they are staying in town, you are running transport twice a night.
What each guest actually needs
Working figures used by event planners, useful for sanity-checking any claim:
- Seated dinner, round tables: about 1.2 to 1.5 m² per guest, service space included.
- Long banqueting tables: slightly less, around 1 m², but they need a long straight run.
- Standing cocktail: 0.6 to 0.8 m² per guest.
- Dance floor: roughly half the guest count will be on it at once — allow 0.5 m² per dancing guest.
So a hundred seated guests need about 130 to 150 m² of usable flat ground for dinner alone, before the bar, the dance floor and the circulation. "The garden is huge" is not an answer; ask for the dimensions of the flat part.
The questions that get you the real number
- How many can sit for dinner without a marquee?
- How many bedrooms, and how many people do they sleep — comfortably, not at a push?
- How many bathrooms?
- Is the dinner area flat? Sloping lawns and gravel are unusable for tables and impossible in heels.
- What is the largest wedding you have actually hosted here? Ask for photographs of it, not of an empty garden.
The last question is the most useful in this article. Capacity claims are theoretical; a photograph of 120 people eating is not.
When to add a marquee
Beyond roughly 80 guests, most Marrakech properties need a structure — for shade, for wind, or simply for space. That changes the budget significantly: marquee, flooring, lighting and furniture form a line that barely exists below 80 and can dominate above it. The number most couples land on
Between 40 and 80. Large enough that it feels like a wedding, small enough that everyone fits at one dinner, that the property can sleep a good part of the group, and that no structure is needed. It is also the range where Marrakech is at its best value.
